International Baccalaureate (IB) Japanese

We teach Japanese lessons for the IB Diploma Programme (DP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) curricula.

At Kaneko Japanese Academy, we teach Japanese for both the NSW HSC Curriculum, and for the Language Acquisition subject of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. For more than a decade, we have provided tutoring to dozens of Japanese IB students in Sydney, and since early 2020, to students all around Australia and overseas via Zoom.

What if Your IB School Doesn't Offer Japanese?

In addition to regular students who come to our academy to supplement their school studies, we have also taught Japanese to numerous IB students over the years whose schools did not have Japanese lessons available.

These students therefore learned the entirety of their Diploma Programme Japanese exclusively through our academy, rather than through school lessons.

When providing tutoring to students in this situation, we work closely with their school's language department staff and keep them updated regularly about the student's progress. This cooperation from the schools is essential since Kaneko Japanese Academy is not an officially accredited IB school.

We have had several Australian schools actually approach us themselves to provide this service to students, and they were very keen to work in partnership with us.

Whether you need IB Japanese tutoring to help with your school studies or to act as a substitute for school lessons, therefore, we are able to help you.

What is the IB?

The IB is an international not-for-profit educational foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, which offers educational programmes for children globally. As of October 2024, over 8,000 programmes were being offered across over 5,900 schools in over 160 countries.

The objective of the IB is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

The IB's learner profile represents its mission in action, and concisely describes the aspirations of a global community that shares the values underlying the IB's educational philosophy. The IB learner profile describes the attributes and outcomes of education for international-mindedness. IB learners strive to be:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

IB Programmes

At Kaneko Japanese Academy we offer tuition to students undertaking the following three IB programmes:

Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year programme primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19 years. It provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognised by many universities worldwide. The DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay.

Middle Years Programme

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year program for students aged 11 to 16 years, and is intended to prepare students for the two-year Diploma Programme. The curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, and at least 50 hours of teaching time is required for each subject group, in each year of the programme.

Primary Years Programme

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a programme for students aged 3 to 12 years. It prepares students for the Middle Years Programme, however it is not a prerequisite for it. PYP students are guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, and deepen their learning by developing conceptual understandings; strengthening their knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas. Students are required to learn a second language during the PYP programme.
