Lessons

At Kaneko Japanese Academy our lessons are especially strucured to provide an all-encompassing learning experience of the Japanese language.

Lesson Structure

The 3 main aims of our Japanese lessons are to ensure that all of our students:

  1. Achieve a strong foundation in all areas of Japanese.
  2. Set high academic goals in their studies, and exceed them.
  3. Become fluent in correct formal and conversational Japanese, as is used by native Japanese people.

As appropriate, each Japanese lesson will cover the following components:

  • Reading
  • Writing (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji)
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Clarifying any problems with students' schoolwork

The amount of time spent on each of these skills will depend upon each student's individual needs and level of development.

Each student is given one-on-one attention from a dedicated native-speaking Japanese assistant tutor for practicing and assessment of many of these components.

At the end of each lesson students are given a list of tasks to study in their own time, which covers:

  • Vocabulary (memorising new words and phrases)
  • Grammar (reviewing material learned in lesson)
  • Reading (if appropriate to their level)
  • Writing (if appropriate to their level)
  • Kanji

We generally begin preparing our Japanese language students for their HSC exams from the moment they begin lessons with us, by familiarising them with what will ultimately be expected of them. In this way, they have a valuable advantage in their final high school year that allows them to outperform their peers.

Generally speaking, schools permit students to sit for their Japanese HSC exams at the end of Year 10. As a result, we occasionally have our advanced students taking their HSC exams early, rather than waiting until the end of Year 12.
